I normally do not take the time to write reviews, however, I feel that the experience I had with Garderie des Couleurs warranted comment. I decided to go with this day care as spaces in the Embrun area are quite hard to come by and to be honest I felt quite fortunate to have found a spot. However, my child only remained in the day care for one month because of the stress in dealing with the owner of Garderie des Couleurs, Christine. While I believe my child was taken care of when in Christine's care, she was a very unreliable caregiver and dealing with her was nothing short of stressful and a hassle. During the 30 days of care, Christine took 5 sick days and closed 4 times with little notice and also had 2 stat holidays (these of course are within her rights). However, this meant she only watched my son for a total of 19 days and this is why I feel compelled to give a two star rating because her dependability/reliability was essentially non-existent. Christine does not feel it necessary to provide references as she advised me she had 25 years experience in the field and therefore was never required to provide them in the past and nor would she now. This to me was odd, and of course hindsight is 20/20, however, given the pressures in trying to secure child care I pressed forward in placing my child in her care. The next roadblock I faced was regarding transitioning my child to Christine’s Day Care. We had recently moved to the area and I had requested that I be permitted in her home to ease the transition, and unfortunately Christine was adamant about not letting me be present - this was such a departure from what I was used to as my child's previous child care provider encouraged transitioning with the parents so as to minimize the stress on the children. Another point of contention for me was the fact that Christine runs three businesses, Yoga, the Day Care and a home based beauty care company - the issue not lying with the fact that she runs three business but rather with the fact that on a daily basis Christine would say she could barely have time to breathe because she was so busy with all three businesses and tired too which made me wonder if this contributed to her high number of sick days. As well, with Garderie des Couleurs you are required to pay for the child care before the service is rendered, i.e. every Sunday if you elect to e-transfer the funds or every Monday if you do cheques. So, if more sick days, personal days etc are taken than what is laid out in the contract, it wouldn’t matter as your payment would have already been received. Finally, while Christine’s ads state that she places the children above everything else, that is not the sentiment I felt. On more than one occasion, if my child was to be the only child in her care, she would state “I have no one to look after so if you do not want to bring your child you do not have to” while still fully expecting to be paid. I finally made it a point and told her that my child is someone, therefore you do have someone to look after - this interaction did not sit well with me and ironically was two of the four days where the day care closed on short notice. Another significant issue with Garderie des Couleurs was regarding the issuing of an income tax receipt. On four separate occasions (14 September, 16 November, 11 January and 18 January) I requested Christine to provide me with a receipt covering the period of which my child was in her care in accordance with the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014, S.O. 2014, Part II, Section 15 “Upon request, any licensee or child care provider shall provide a receipt for payment to a person who pays the licensee or child care provider for child care, and the receipt shall be provided free of charge and in accordance with the regulations”. I requested the receipt in person, via text message and through Facebook messenger and Christine subsequently blocked me from sending her messages after she advised me it would be provided at the end of the year - I received the receipt today, 1 March 2018, two months after the end of the 2017 calendar year and five months after the last day my son was in her care. Lastly, but primarily as a point of information and not complaint so as to inform anyone considering Garderie des Couleurs for their children, Christine’s contract states three weeks vacation, 5 sick days, 7 personal days and all holidays (including Remembrance Day and Family Day) are to be paid for in full. In my experience this is on the higher end of paid days, however, again this is within her rights, so not a point of complaint, rather a point of information. The above points are the primary issues I experienced while my son was at Garderie des Couleurs. That being said, I do feel it important to highlight what I felt to be positive: 1. Christine’s home was always very clean and tidy; 2. Garderie des Couleurs has a very spacious back yard with a lot of outdoor play structures for the kids to play on; 3. A lot of outdoor play from what I could gather; 4. Meals are provided (normally sandwiches and cucumbers from what my son said); and 5. Fair daily rate ($40 a day). I do hope that if you have taken the time to read my review it was useful, and that you have found some helpful points.
